They sang "Home on the Range" at the request of the emperor of Japan, something Pritchard called an odd request considering the band's rockabilly style.
One important part of the explanation for this state of affairs can be found in the literal center of the country: Smith County, Kansas, birthplace of the song "Home on the Range" (the log cabin of the Kansas pioneer who wrote its lyrics still stands in Smith County today).
