Álvarez, José

Álvarez, José (José Álvarez de Pereira y Cubero) (hōsā` äl`värĕth dā pārā`rä ē kbā`rō), 1768–1827, Spanish neoclassical sculptor. He was a follower of Canova. Álvarez was employed on the decoration of the Quirinal Palace in Rome. On returning to Madrid he became director of the Academy of San Fernando and sculptor to Ferdinand VII. He is best known for his portrait statues of Spanish royalty and for his mythological figures in marble (e.g., Nestor and Antilochus, 1818; Modern Art Mus., Madrid).
