Ålborg (ôl`bôrg, ôl`bôr), city (1992 pop. 114,970), capital of Nordjylland co., N Denmark, on both sides of the Limfjord. It is a major industrial, transportation, and cultural center. Manufactures include cement, machinery, chemicals, liquor, ships, spitirs, and textiles. Known in the 11th cent., Ålborg was chartered in 1342. Of note are the Cathedral of St. Botolph (12th cent.), Ålborghus castle (early 16th cent.), and Ålborghallen (1953), Scandinavia's largest conference and concert center. The city has two colleges. Until 1948 the name was spelled Aalborg.
