Épernay

Épernay (āpĕrnā`), town (1990 pop. 27,738), Marne dept., NE France, on the Marne River. It is, next to Reims, the largest manufacturing center for champagne champagne , sparkling white wine made from grapes grown in the old French province of Champagne. The best champagne is from that part of the Marne valley whose apex is Reims, the center of the industry.

 wine and the headquarters of some of the oldest firms, notably Moët. The wine is stored in caves (open to tourists) which form a labyrinth some 30 mi (48 km) long in the surrounding hills. Heavy fighting there during World War I destroyed many old buildings.
Épernay 

a city in northeastern France, in Marne Department, on the Marne River, at the foot of the Ile-de-France cuesta. Population, 38,000 (1975). Epernay is a center of wine-making and the bottling and storing of champagne. It also manufactures wood products and tools.
