Although considerably damaged during World War II, the city today is an active industrial center, with textile and metal industries and plants making morocco leather, precision instruments, and bicycles. It is famous for the images d'Épinal, popular illustrations printed there since the 16th cent. Of interest are the remains of a château containing the St. Maurice Basilica with its 11th-century nave.
