Magdalen Islands

Magdalen Islands (măg`dələn) or Îles-de-la-Madeleine (ēl-də-lä-mädlĕn`), group of nine main islands and numerous islets (1991 pop. 13,991), Que., Canada, in the Gulf of St. Lawrence N of Prince Edward Island. They were discovered (1534) by Jacques Cartier. The main islands are Alright, Amherst, Brion, Coffin, East, Entry, Grindstone, Grosse, and Wolf. Fishing and sealing are the chief occupations of the islanders, most of whom are of French descent.

Island group of eastern Quebec, Canada. Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence between Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, the group comprises several islands and islets, with a total area of 88 sq mi (228 sq km). The largest include Havre-Aubert (Amherst) and Cap aux Meules (Grindstone). Discovered by Jacques Cartier in 1534, the islands are inhabited mainly by French Canadians.
