Écossaise

a folk dance of Scottish origin performed to bagpipe music. The écossaise is a variety of contredanse, a dance common in Great Britain. It was performed as a ballroom dance in France beginning in the late 18th century. The musical time was first 3/4 and later 2/4. The main movements include a sliding step and hop. The écossaise was used as a musical form by Beethoven, Schubert, and Chopin.
