Žatec

(zhä`tĕts), Ger. Saaz, city (1991 pop. 21,422), NW Czech Republic, in Bohemia. It is a center for agricultural trade. Žatec was founded in the 11th cent. The city was captured and burned by the Swedes in 1639, during the Thirty Years War.

a city in Czechoslovakia, on the Ohře River, in Severočeský Krai, Czech Socialist Republic. Population, 16,300 (1968). Žatec is a railway junction and the regional center for hop- growing and brewing. The city has a church from the 14th century and a town hall from the 16th century.
