1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of ethoxylation, "a cheap short-cut companies use to provide mildness to harsh ingredients," explains the Organic Consumers Association.
The campaign also recently sent a letter to Johnson & Johnson asking the company by the end of August to reformulate its personal care products so that they are free of 1,4-dioxane and preservatives that release formaldehyde.
1,4-dioxane is considered a chemical "known to the state of California to cause cancer".
