The polycarbonatediols are derived from 1,6-hexanediol and another diol of either 1,4-butanediol or 1,5-pentanediol and ethylenecarbonate.
The toys were supposed to be coated with 1,5-pentanediol, a non-toxic compound, but instead contained 1,4-butanediol, which when ingested metabolises into the date-rape drug gamma hydroxy butyrate (GHB).
Typical products for the paint and coatings industry are 1,6-hexanediol, 1,5-pentandiol, 1,12-dodecanedionic acid (DDA), 1,6-hexanediol, 1,5-pentanediol and polycarbonate diols at our Spanish plant.
