(also D-ribosyl uracil), an organic substance and nucleoside composed of residues of the pyrimidine uracil and the carbohydrate ribose. Uridine occurs either as a white powder or as long acicular or prismatic crystals. It is soluble in water, acids, and alkalies but insoluble in ether and concentrated ethanol; its molecular weight is 244.2. Uridine is present in all living cells as a constituent of ribonucleic acids. It plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism, forming part of many coenzymes.
