10Base2

An earlier 10 Mbps Ethernet standard that used a thin coaxial cable. Network nodes were attached to the cable via T-type BNC connectors in the adapter cards. Also called "thin Ethernet," "ThinWire," "ThinNet" and "Cheapernet," 10Base2 had a distance limit of 607 feet. See Ethernet.

10Base2 used a thin coaxial cable attached to each node using BNC T-connectors.


(networking)10base2 - (Or "cheapernet") The variant of Ethernet that uses thin coaxial cable (RG-58 or similar), as opposed to 10base5 cable.

The "10" means 10 Mbps, "base" means "baseband" as opposed to radio frequency and "2" means a maximum single cable length of 200m.

A fibre media converter can reliably and inexpensively extend the distance between two 10Base2 devices or two 10BaseT devices up to 2,000 meters.
The new line of IHMCs include the model H101 IHNC, which is a 10Base2 to 10BaseT Hardened Ethernet Media Converter, the model HF101 IHMC, which is a 10BaseFL to 10BaseT Hardened Ethernet Media Converter and the model HF1001 IHMC, which is a 100BaseTX to 100BaseFX Hardened Ethernet Media Converter.
Additionally, the FS-C5016N has optional equipment, including automatic duplexing, an envelope feeder, the IB-20 10/100BaseTX, 10Base2 network interface and the IB-22 embedded wireless interface.
