mini-phone connector
Also called a 1/8" connector or 3.5 mm connector, it is a plug and socket widely used for all variety of audio and video connections on portable devices. For example, mini-phone jacks are the headphones sockets on smartphones, digital music players and portable DVD players.

Sub-mini jacks are a smaller version with a thinner shank (3/32" or 2.5 mm) that have been widely used on cellphones and other compact devices.

Mono, Stereo and Headsets
Mini and sub-mini connectors are used with two-wire mono cables, three-wire stereo cables and four-wire headset cables. You can tell the difference by the number of elements on the plug (see tip and ring). See phone connector, RCA connector, A/V ports and plugs & sockets.

Mini and Sub-Mini Connectors
Monaural plugs are identified by the two divisions in their prong. Stereo plugs have three, and plugs for headsets with a built-in microphone have four (see tip and ring).
