Abu
a mountain in Rajasthan, India; one of the religious centers of the adherents of Jainism. It is famous for its white marble Jain temples. These include the temple of Adinatha (built by Vimala Shah in 1031), with 52 sanctuaries around its courtyard, a columned vestibule, and a pyramidal roof; and the temple of Neminatha (built by Raja Tejpal in 1230), with 39 sanctuaries. The temple interiors are richly decorated with extremely fine lacelike carvings and inlaid with fine gems. In the sanctuaries are statues of the Jain religious teachers. S. I.
