base course[′bās ‚kȯrs]
The lowest course or first course of a wall.
The first layer of material laid down in construction of a pavement.
The lowest course on a masonry wall or pier, may also be part of the footing.
1. A foundation or footing course, as the lowest course in a masonry wall.
2. A layer of selected material of planned thickness, constructed on the subgrade or subbase for the purpose of serving one or more functions such as distributing load, providing drainage, minimizing frost action, etc.
3. The lowest layer in a pavement construction.
The layer(s) of a specified material of designed thickness placed on a sub-base or subgrade to support the surface course. The base course and subgrade are structural elements of the pavement. In conjunction with the overlying asphalt surface, their purpose is to distribute traffic wheel loads over the whole foundation. Also called a base.
