Alei

(in its upper reaches, the Eastern Alei), left tributary of the upper Ob’ in the Altai Krai of the RSFSR. Its length is 858 km, and the area of its basin is about 21,100 sq km. Much of its course runs on the Ob’ plateau. Fed mainly by snow (in the mountains) and rain, the Alei has an average flow of 33.8 cu m per sec. It freezes in November, and the ice breaks up in April. Water from the river is used for irrigation. The valleys of the Alei and its tributaries are heavily populated; the cities of Rubtsovsk and Aleisk are located on the Alei.
