Amgot

(Allied Military Government of Occupied Territory), an Anglo-American military administrative organ which governed the Italian territories that were liberated from the German fascist invaders in 1943–45, during World War II. Established in July 1943, it was headed by a military governor who was second in command to the British General H. Alexander, commander in chief of the armed forces of the USA and Britain in the Mediterranean. As the Anglo-American forces advanced northward in Italy, AMGOT gradually handed over the governing functions to the local Italian authorities, retaining, however, control over their activity. In so doing, AMGOT gave preference to the conservative forces whose political orientation suited the governments of the USA and Britain and in every possible way impeded the realization of democratic reforms in Italy. On Dec. 31, 1945, AMGOT handed over to the Italian authorities the last regions under its administration, thus, in fact, bringing its existence to an end.

This was rejected by Charles de Gaulle, who felt that the Allied powers might use AMGOT to spread their own culture in France.
