X12
Also known as "ANSI X12" and "ASC X12," it is a protocol from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for electronic data interchange (EDI). X12 was the primary North American standard for defining EDI transactions. It merged with EDIFACT in 1997. See EDI.

ASC X12 and UN/EDIFACT To exploit fully the power of digitization, private businesses and governments throughout the world have established organizations that provide guidelines on standardizing the formats and procedures for exchanging logistics-related information.
In August 1991, members of the MBA Technology Committee Hazard Insurance Work Group and members of the ANSI ASC X12 Subcommittee for Mortgage Lending formed a coalition with the ASC X12N Property and Casualty Policy Administration Work Group to develop a proposal.
Sears switched to an EDI system based on the ANSI ASC X12 standard to provide an up-to-date system with wider transaction ability.
