Although scientists had previously deployed autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) beneath free-floating ice, until last year they'd never sent an AUV under one of Antarctica's ice shelves. These AUVs could be used to confirm the presence of toxic algae in blooms spotted by satellite, eliminating the need for researchers to head out to the blooms by boat to collect samples manually. Additionally, an undisclosed advanced educational institution collaborating on the Seahorse project through the NAVOCEANO's AUV partner program, has placed a separate order for additional cells and a customized battery management system (BMS). |
