AVCHD
(Advanced Video Coding HD) An HD format for camcorders that uses H.264 video and Dolby AC-3 audio compression. Based on the Blu-ray format, which includes menu navigation and subtitles, the first AVCHD camcorders came out in 2006. AVCHD supports resolutions of 1280x720p (AVCHD Lite) and 1920x1080i and 1920x1080p. Earlier camcorders recorded an anamorphic frame at only 1440x1080i. AVCHD also supports the xvYCC color space (see xvYCC). See anamorphic DVD.

Sony and Panasonic, creators of the format, support AVCHD in their Blu-ray players, but other, earlier Blu-ray players may not. If they do, they may not play back content recorded higher than 17 Mbits/sec, while the maximum AVCHD bit rate is 24 Mbits/sec. See Blu-ray and camcorder.
