Aaiun, El-

a city in Western Sahara. Situated on the Atlantic, in an oasis on the left bank of the Saguia el Hamra. Population, 24,500 (1972). El Aaiun is a commercial center. Nearby is a port for exporting phosphorites mined at the Bu Craa deposit, situated 100 km southeast of the city.
