Abdallah Ibn Hussein
Born 1882; died July 20, 1951. King of Jordan; Hashimite dynasty. One of the sons of Hussein, the sharif of Mecca. Abdallah was a deputy in the Turkish parliament from 1909 to 1916 He was a friend to the British authorities in Egypt. From 1916 through 1918 he led Arab detachments laying siege to the Turkish garrison stationed in the Hejaz. With British help, he became emir of Transjordan in 1921, and he was crowned king on May 25, 1946. He concluded several treaties with Britain which transformed the country into a British bridgehead in the Near East. He was killed by a member of a terrorist anti-British organization.
