Abdurakhmanov, Fuad Gasan Ogly 

Born Apr. 28 (May 11), 1915, in Nukha; died June 15, 1971, in Baku. Sculptor. People’s Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR (1955); corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1949). Member of the CPSU from 1962.

Abdurakhmanov studied at the Academy of Arts in Leningrad from 1935 to 1940 under M. G. Manizer. He worked primarily as a sculptor of monuments. His works include monuments to Nizami in Kirovabad (unveiled in 1946, USSR State Prize, 1947) and in Baku (unveiled in 1949); monumental busts of Choibalsan and Sukhe-Bator (marble, 1954, burial vault in Ulan-Bator); memorials to the writer S. Vurgun in Baku (1961) and to the poet Rudaki in Dushanbe (unveiled in 1964); and the statues Liberation (installed in Baku in 1960) and The Shepherd. Abdurakhmanov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1951 for The Shepherd, which he had completed in gypsum in 1950; the same statue in bronze (1951) is in the Tret’iakov Gallery. He created a portrait bust of V. I. Lenin (marble, 1955, Museum of History of Azerbaijan, in Baku) and several other portraits. He was awarded two orders.
