Aberystwyth (ăb'ərĭst`wĭth), town (1991 pop. 10,250), Ceredigion, W Wales, on Cardigan Bay. It is a summer resort and cultural center. Before the construction of railroads, Aberystwyth was a coastal trading center. The town is the seat of a constituent institution of the Univ. of Wales and of the National Library of Wales, which has an outstanding collection of Welsh manuscripts. AberystwythTown (pop., 1991: 11,154) on Cardigan Bay, western Wales. The medieval walled town was built around a 13th-century fortress. It later became the exporter for the once-flourishing local lead mines. A principal stronghold of Welsh culture, it has grown as a seaside resort.
