above the fold

The part of a Web page that is first visible when downloaded without scrolling. This is a design consideration when laying out a Web page so that the impact of the page can be viewed all at once. The majority of monitors today have at least 1,080 lines of resolution, and the page size above the fold is typically close to that number minus some room for the title bar.
