Abramov, Fedor Aleksandrovich
Born Feb. 29, 1920, in the village of Verkola, Arkhangelsk Oblast. Soviet Russian writer. Member of the CPSU since 1945. Abramov graduated from the Leningrad State University’s department of philology in 1948, and in the 1950’s he headed the university’s subdepartment in Soviet literature. His novel Brothers and Sisters (1958) describes northern villagers and their harsh experiences in the years of the Great Patriotic War. Some of his works, such as the novella Fatherlessness (1961) and stories from the cycle In Severnaya Zemlya (1962), depict contemporary kolkhoz life. Beating Around the Bush (1963) contains sketches on agricultural themes. His novels Two Winters and Three Summers (1968) and Pelageia (1969) deal with postwar life in northern villages. In addition to fiction he has written critiques of Soviet literature. He has been awarded the Order of the Patriotic War Second Class and also various medals.
