Abravanel, Maurice (1903–93) conductor; born in Saloniki, Greece. After conducting in Europe and at the Metropolitan Opera (1936–38), he began a brilliant tenure with the Utah Symphony (1947–79), where he became known for performing works of American and other contemporary composers.
