Abrikosov, Aleksei Ivanovich 

Born Jan. 6 (18), 1875; died Apr. 9, 1955. Soviet pathological anatomist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939) and the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944). Hero of Socialist Labor (1945). Member of the CPSU from 1939.

Abrikosov graduated from Moscow University in 1899. From 1920 to 1953 he was a professor in the department of medicine at Moscow University (from 1930, the First Moscow Medical Institute). He was director of the Institute of Normal and Pathological Morphology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR from 1944 to 1951. He organized, and from 1938 was honorary chairman, of the Moscow Society of Pathologists. His main works were devoted to pulmonary tuberculosis, pathological anatomy of sympathetic ganglions, muscular tumors, and the morphology of allergies. He was a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Abrikosov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1942. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
