(mathematics)
A special case of recurrent state in a Markov process in which the transition probability,Pii, equals 1; a process will never leave an absorbing state once it enters.

The establishment of NPS areas absorbing state park lands has sometimes led to charges of NPS "land grabbing," similar to the time when National Forest or Bureau of Land Management lands had been transferred to NPS.
That hasn't gone over well with some members of the academic community, who believe spending on athletics has gotten out of control - particularly when the school is absorbing state budget cuts.
We assume that attrition is an absorbing state in that neither individuals nor their proxy respondents can return to the survey once they exit.
