Abu Al-Timman, Muhammad Jafar

Born 1881; died 1945. Iraqi political and governmental figure and a great entrepreneur. Abu al-Timman took part in the anti-British uprising of 1920. He was one of the leaders of the national patriotic group Ahali (literally, people). In 1936–37, when he was finance minister in the Hikmet Sulayman government, he led a group of ministers who advocated agrarian reform, democratization of the political system, and promotion of national industry. After 1937 he did not play a prominent political role, but he possessed great authority among the patriotic strata of the population.
