Academic Legion
an armed student organization which participated in the revolution of 1848–49 in Austria. It was formed immediately after the outbreak of the popular uprising in Vienna on Mar. 13, 1848. The legion united nearly 4,000 people and constituted the nucleus of the revolutionary army. The Academic Legion played an active role in the March Uprising, in the May 1848 armed action, and in the October 1848 armed uprising in Vienna, in which it formed an important part of the revolutionary forces.
