Academic Year
the interval of time from the beginning of studies in the universities, usually in autumn of the calendar year, until their conclusion the following summer—as a rule, between eight and ten months. The term is used in many countries and corresponds to “school year,” a term accepted in the USSR for all educational institutions. Academic Year the period of time extending from the beginning of studies in educational institutions to the annual vacation. The academic year was first established in Western European and Ukrainian schools in the late 16th and early 17th centuries with the introduction of the classroom system of instruction. Until the late 16th century children could enroll in school at any time of the year, and studies continued throughout the year, without an annual vacation. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
