In south-central LA, west of Lafayette; organized 1886 from Saint Landry Parish. Name Origin: French Acadie, an area in northeastern Canada and ME, former home of present-day Cajuns, descendants of Frence settlers displaced by English troops. Their journey is subject of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's (1807-82) poem, "Evangeline."

Area (sq mi): 657.62 (land 655.28; water 2.33). Pop per sq mi: 90.90.
Pop 2005: 59,552. State rank: 19. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.20%; 1990-2000 5.30%. Pop 2000: 58,861 (White 80.10%; Black or African American 18.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 0.20%; Other 0.90%). Foreign born: 0.40%. Median age: 33.70.
Income 2000: per capita $13,424; median household $26,684; Pop below poverty level: 24.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,513-$21,683.

    Additionally, the Company anticipates spudding of the Turtle Soup prospect located in Acadia Parish, Louisiana during the fourth quarter 2006, which is designed to test the Marg-Tex sands at an approximate depth of 15,000 feet with an unrisked reserve target of 50 BCFE.
    The assessment evaluated the Company's Barnett Crossroads Prospect located in Escambia County, Alabama and the North Wright Prospect located in Acadia Parish, Louisiana.
