Academia

Soviet publishing house. Founded in 1922 in Petrograd as a private concern, it was then reorganized into the publishing house attached to the State Institute of the History of Arts in Leningrad. After its move to Moscow in 1938, Academia merged with the State Literature Publishing House. M. Gorky was the chairman of its editorial committee. In the late 1920’s the house began publishing the series Treasures of World Literature, Classics of World Literature, and Monuments of Art and the Literary, Social, and Artistic Way of Life. Also published were literary classics of the Soviet peoples and others. Academia books were usually accompanied by introductory articles and scholarly commentaries and were distinguished by their high level of typography and design.
