access courses

certificated courses (in England, level 3, A-level equivalent) designed to prepare ‘mature students’ (usually over 21 years) for entry to HIGHER EDUCATION by providing academic preparation, study skills and an alternative entry qualification. Currently 8% of students in the UK enter HE via Access courses (UCAS, 1998).
