On the southern Delmarva peninsula, off the east coast of VA; organized 1663 from Northampton County. Name Origin: For a subtribe of the Powhatans; name is said to mean 'across the water,' since they lived across Chesapeake Bay from their kinsmen. The county retains the spelling closer to the Indian word accawmacke.

Area (sq mi): 1310.05 (land 455.24; water 854.80). Pop per sq mi: 86.60.
Pop 2005: 39,424. State rank: 42. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.90%; 1990-2000 20.80%. Pop 2000: 38,305 (White 61.90%; Black or African American 31.60%; Hispanic or Latino 5.40%; Asian 0.20%; Other 4.90%). Foreign born: 4.20%. Median age: 39.40.
Income 2000: per capita $16,309; median household $30,250; Pop below poverty level: 18.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,314-$20,776.
Unemployment 2004: 4.30%. Change from 2000: 0.00%. Median travel time to work: 23.00 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 21.10%.
