Achté, Emmy Charlotta 

(née Strömer). Born Nov. 14, 1850, in Oulu; died Dec. 2, 1924, in Helsinki. Finnish soprano and singing teacher. Wife of the composer and singer L. N. Achté. She was one of the founders of Finnish operatic art.

Achté studied singing in Helsinki with Mehelin, in Paris with V. Massé, in Stockholm with J. B. Lamperti, and in Dresden with E. Hildach. From 1873 to 1879 she was the leading singer of the Finnish Opera in Helsinki. She sang Lucia in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Leonora in Verdi’s Il Trovatore, Norma in Bellini’s Norma, Pamina in Mozart’s Magic Flute, and Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust, and other parts. From 1891 to 1922 she directed her own operatic troupe. From 1912 to 1924 she taught at the Institute of Music in Helsinki (now the Sibelius Academy).
