Acting Officer
a serviceman of the Russian army in the 19th and early 20th centuries who held an officer’s position but not an officer’s rank. If there was a shortage of officers, their positions could be filled by noncommissioned officers first class who had volunteered for the army and had received a higher or secondary education and by sergeants major and senior noncommissioned officers serving beyond their term of military obligation.
