Acute Accent

rising pitch, one of the types of musical, or polytonic, intonation, in which the stressed vowel or the stressed syllable as a whole is pronounced with a gradual raising of the frequency of the basic tone of the voice. The acute accent existed in the ancient Slavic languages, where it contrasted with the grave accent, or falling pitch. In ancient Greek the acute accent, having one crest, was opposed to the two-crested circumflex accent.
