ad-supported software

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
ad-supported software
Software that is paid for by advertisers. It is free software that displays banner ads that come from the Web. Like shareware, you can register ad-supported software for a fee, in which case the ads are eliminated making more room for data on screen. See shareware, adserver and Internet advertising.

Placing the Ads
Conducent's earlier FlexActive software provided the conduit between the source of the ads and their placement in a developer's application, in this case GlobalSCAPE's cuteFTP program. FlexActive kept track of click-throughs and could also cache ads so they could be rotated when the user was not online. (Screen shot courtesy of Conducent, Inc.)

Green also notes that delivering ad-supported software on the Web eliminates much of the overhead of conventional software publishing.
Our ability to attract over 200,000 dedicated business users of our ad-supported software in just over a year has made our network of IT professionals an extremely valuable way to quickly and easily reach over $20 billion dollars in annual buying power for computer goods and services that run small and medium businesses around the world.
