adze

 or adz

Hand tool for shaping wood. A handheld stone chipped to form a blade, it is one of the earliest tools, and was used widely in the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. By Egyptian times, it had acquired a wooden haft (handle) with a copper or bronze blade set flat at the top of the haft to form a T. In this form but with a steel blade, it continued to be the prime hand tool for shaping and trimming wood; the carpenter stands on or astride a log or other piece of timber, swinging the adze like a pick, down and between the legs.

adze (US), adz
a heavy hand tool with a steel cutting blade attached at right angles to a wooden handle, used for dressing timber

adz [adz]
(design engineering)
A cutting tool with a thin arched blade, sharpened on the concave side, at right angles on the handle; used for rough dressing of timber.

adz
adz
A cutting tool whose thin arching blade is perpendicular to the handle; used for the rough-shaping of wood.

Adz

a tool for working wood. In the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age, adzes were fashioned from stone and had the form of a wedge with a widened, sometimes slightly arched working edge. The blade was inserted into a bent wooden handle at right angles to the handle. In the Bronze Age, adzes were also made of copper and bronze. Iron adzes came into use in the Iron Age. They had the shape of an ax with a replaceable blade set at right angles to the handle. The working edge of the adz was usually widened and arched; occasionally it was fluted for use in chiseling. Carpenters continued to use adzes until the 20th century.

ADZ is an alternative financing model which has been used successfully in the past where Enterprise Zones (EZs) have previously helped accelerate growth areas.
We have recently issued guidance to all areas to help them better understand how to set up and run an ADZ should they wish to do so.
The City Region leaders have already earmarked several projects for ADZ status including the Birmingham Eastside development, Birmingham Wholesale Markets, Bordesley Park, Wednesbury to Brierley Hill extension rapid transit scheme, city centre to Airport rapid transit scheme, M6 J10 improvements, M5 J2 improvements and i54 Wolverhampton.
