veld or veldt (both: vĕlt, Du. fĕlt) [Du.,=field], term applied to the grassy undulating plateaus of the Republic of South Africa and of Zimbabwe. The veld comprises territory of varying elevation—the high veld (4,000–6,000 ft/1,220–1,830 m), the middle veld (2,000–4,000 ft/610–1,220 m), and the lowveld (500–2,000 ft/150–610 m). The high veld, the largest of the plateaus, is in the Republic of South Africa. Abundant crops of potatoes and corn are grown, large cattle herds are grazed, and industrial and mining centers are found there. veld, veldt elevated open grassland in Southern Africa How to thank TFD for its existence? My obsession with Land Rover dates back to my early teen years in
Johannesburg, when Range Rovers were passports to great adventures in
the African veldt. Here, deep in the South African veldt, the silence is full of
birds' calls, and the chattering and bickering of monkeys and
baboons. That led filmmakers to crank out a steady stream of documentaries
on everything from outer space to the African veldt - the ideal fare for
museums but not necessarily big crowd-pleasers. |
