Agartala (əgŭr`tələ), city (1991 pop. 157,358), capital of Tripura state, NE India, near the Bangladesh border. A market town for rice, tea, jute, and oilseed, it is the commercial center of the region. There is an airport with connections to Kolkata (Calcutta). AgartalaCity (pop., 2001: 189,998), capital of Tripura state, northeastern India. It lies near the Bangladesh border on the Haroa River in an intensively cultivated plain.
