agglomerateLarge, coarse, angular rock fragments associated with lava flow that are ejected during explosive volcanic eruptions. Although they may appear to resemble sedimentary conglomerates, agglomerates are igneous rocks that consist almost wholly of angular or rounded lava fragments of varying size and shape. Some geologists sort agglomerates into bombs, blocks, and breccia. Bombs are ejected in a molten state, becoming rounded upon solidification, and blocks are erupted as solid fragments. Upon accumulation and solidification of the angular fragments (also known as pyroclastics), they form agglomerates. agglomerate a rock consisting of angular fragments of volcanic lava agglomerate [ə′gläm·ə·rət] (geology) A pyroclastic rock composed of angular rock fragments in a matrix of volcanic ash; typically occurs in volcanic vents. (metallurgy) A rigid mass of metallic particles that have been joined together by a powder metallurgical technique, such as sintering. How to thank TFD for its existence? | For resins that tend to agglomerate, the Centri-sifter centrifugal
separator can be incorporated in the system for continuous delumping of
the material. Dispersive mixing is governed by a competition between the
hydrodynamic forces acting on the particulate agglomerate and the
cohesive forces holding that agglomerate together. By their
very nature, agglomerate structures have higher surface areas than
spherical particles with the same equivalent diameter and are generally
less dense. |
