Aguascalientes, city (1990 pop. 455,234), capital of Aguascalientes state, central Mexico. The city is a pleasant health resort, noted for its mineral waters and vineyards. Its industries include railroad repair and the manufacture of textiles. Aguascalientes is built over an ancient, intricate system of tunnels constructed by early, still unidentified, inhabitants. Founded in 1575, the city was long a Spanish outpost; railroad development in the late 19th cent. gave it commercial importance.

Aguascalientes (ä'gwäskälyān`tās, ä'wäs–) [Span.,="hot waters"], state (1990 pop. 719,659), 2,007 sq mi (5,200 sq km), central Mexico, on the Anáhuac plateau. Aguascalientes is the capital. Cattle are raised on the wide plains and in the foothills; alfalfa, corn, wheat, chilies, and peaches are grown; and wine and brandy are produced. There is some mining in the mountainous areas, especially for silver and zinc. Aguascalientes is noted for its warm mineral springs and for its beautiful climate.

Aguascalientes

It was explored by Spaniards in the 16th century and became a colonial mining centre. During the revolution of 1910–20 it was the scene of bitter fighting. Today it is a fertile agricultural area and is noted for its mineral production. Its capital is the city of Aguascalientes.

Aguascalientes

City (pop., 2000: 594,056), capital of Aguascalientes state, Mexico. Located on the Aguascalientes River, it was founded as a mining settlement in 1575 and became the state capital in the 1850s. It is sometimes called La Ciudad Perforada (“The Perforated City”) because of an underground labyrinth of tunnels built by an unknown pre-Columbian people. It is an agricultural centre, with several industries. Several notable churches possess outstanding examples of colonial religious art.

Aguascalientes

The textile industry (cotton fabric, wool) and the food industry (milling, fruit canning) are well developed. Aguascalientes is the trading center of the agricultural region. A health resort with hot mineral springs is located near the city; this is the derivation of its name. Aguascalientes was founded in 1575.
