air interface

The specification for the radio transmission between base station and mobile units in a wireless network. It is the wireless counterpart of the physical layer 1 in the OSI model (see OSI model).

The air interface defines the frequency, channel bandwidth, modulation scheme and other attributes. For example, CDMA and TDMA are the air interfaces for the cellular networks, and 802.11 is the air interface for Wi-Fi networks. See CDMA, TDMA and 802.11.
