AirFuel

(AirFuel Alliance, www.airfuel.org) An organization of nearly 200 members formed in 2015 from the merger of the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) and Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP).

AirFuel Inductive
This is the closely coupled inductive charging technology that was developed by the PMA. Operating in the 100-200 kHz range, the device and charger must be within a few millimeters of each other. Multimode charging pads in the center consoles of various automobiles support AirFuel Inductive/PMA as well as the Qi closely coupled technology.

AirFuel Resonant
Developed by the A4WP, this loosely coupled method was originally known as Rezence. Operating at the 6.78 MHz frequency, the device and charger can be an inch or more apart, which enables under-table mounting. Trimode charging cases for smartphones and charging pads support both AirFuel methods, as well as Qi. See Qi wireless charging and wireless charging.

The standards battle for short-range, inductive charging, and the early steps to resonant charging between the Wireless Power Consortium (Qi branded) and AirFuel is largely mitigated by multi-mode receivers, which are already leading shipments.
The contemplated semiconductor offerings include designs that comply with the AirFuel magnetic resonance specification as well as multi-mode solutions that incorporate both resonant and inductive charging.
AirFuel members now have regulatory approval of resonant products in the United States, China, and other major technology hubs around the world.
