airborne

i. The state of an aircraft from the moment it becomes entirely sustained by air (i.e., it has gained flying speed) until it ceases to be so sustained (i.e., either landed or crashed). In the case of lighter-than-air aircraft, they are not said to be airborne as long as they are attached to the ground except in the case of balloons, which though moored are airborne when sent aloft.
ii. Specially trained forces capable of carrying out operations after either touching down or parachuting. Hence, they are called airborne forces.
iii. Items of equipment especially designed for use by airborne forces during or after an airborne assault.
iv. Materiel designed to be transported by aircraft. This does not include items of equipment and weapons installed in the aircraft or that form an integral part of the aircraft.
v. Personnel and equipment transported by air.
