Aitiev, Gapar Aitievich 

Born Sept. 15, 1912, in the village First Tuleiken, in the present-day Osh Oblast, Kirghiz SSR. One of the first Soviet Kirghiz artists. Became National Artist of the Kirghiz SSR in 1954. Member of the CPSU since 1939.

Aitiev studied in the 1905 Moscow Technical School of Fine Arts (1935–38) with N. P. Krymov. He painted such poetic landscapes, full of epic calmness, as The Kolkhoz Yard (1946, Kirghiz Museum of Fine Arts, Frunze), Midday on the Issyk-Kul (1954, Tret’iakov Gallery), The Outskirts of Andizhan (1967, Kirghiz Museum of Fine Arts, Frunze); a series of portraits; genre canvases; and monumental frescoes. He received the Toktogul State Prize of the Kirghiz SSR in 1967 and was awarded the Order of Lenin and three other decorations as well as medals.
