Aizawl (īzoul`) or Aijal (ījäl`), city (1991 pop. 155,240), capital of the state of Mizoram Mizoram , state (2001 provisional pop. 891,058), c.8,000 sq mi (20,720 sq km), NE India, in the Mizo Hills, bordered on the east and south by Myanmar, on the west by Bangladesh and Tripura, on the northeast by Manipur, and on the north by Assam. The capital is Aizawl.

Indigenous handicrafts are produced. In the 1970s, Aizawl was the site of an attack on the government treasury by members of the Mizo National Front. AizawlCity (pop., 2001: 228,280), capital of Mizoram state, northeastern India. It is situated on a ridge at an elevation of about 2,950 ft (900 m). The surrounding region is part of the Assam-Myanmar geologic province, with steeply inclined hill ranges. Many of the people are from Myanmar (Burma). In the 1970s Aizawl was the scene of an armed attack on the government treasury by members of the Mizo National Front. Manufactures include aluminum utensils, handloom textiles, and furniture.
